It is with deep regret that we record the death, on Sept. 21st, of MR. HERBERT D. GELDART, to whose always ready help and stimulating counsel we owe in large measure the success of our Nature Note Books. We acknowledged our great debt at the beginning of the year, when M. Geldart felt it necessary to give up the work of examining our Nature Note Books, a work to which he had given ungrudging labour and interest for some nine years.
In a dedicated letter, dated June 28th, he says: "It is evident I was right in withdrawing when I did; even if the doctors succeed in patching me up for a time, I can never expect to be able to undertake any work again.
"Mr. Geldart," to quote the Eastern Daily Press, "was an exceptionally fine botanist. He had a very fine herbarium, and he distinguished himself greatly by the ability with which he edited the section relating to the botany of Norfolk in the Victoria History of England. He was a skilled geographer, he was deeply learned in the history and practice of various forms of art, and those who wanted information on questions of natural history found in him a perfect mine of knowledge, which he was always ready, often at the cost of much time and trouble, to put at the service of the enquirer."
The students of the House of Education through a considerable tale of years can testify to the truth of this statement. Writing to Miss Hodgson in December last, Mr. Geldart said, "It hardly seems nine years since you began your nature work, but anyway there is no doubt it has been good work on original lines, and that is a good deal to say in these days of wholesale imitation and crib."
