You don't need to install LibreOffice. 
My Word was installed on a computer that recently died, so I can't test there. .doc is an older Word format and should be perfectly readable. Since I downloaded the file and opened it successfully, it doesn't appear to actually be corrupted.
My first suggestion to you would be to try again. Is disk space or memory a possible problem?
