Private Messages

I have 8 saved private messages and I wanted to send another one, but it said I am over the limit, or 100% full. Do I have to delete all the messages to be able to receive messages? Is there a certain amount of messages you can have saved?

I have quite a few more than 8 messages stored in my box, and it's not full. ____
